GLSA inducts Dr Ron Butterly as Honorary Member
Tinos Island, Greece 06.04.2025. The GLSA inducted Dr Ron Butterly as an Honorary Member for his long contributions and supports to its founders and Greece in the fields of drowning prevention at academic level.
Dr Butterly was rescued and rescued others by drowning, before he worked
as a lifeguard. He was a Principal Lecturer of Physiology at Leeds Metropolitan
University, UK. It was there that he met, supervised and supported the GLSA
founders, Stathis and Eleftheria, at BSc,
MSc and PhD level. His name appears in several journal articles, conference
proceedings and book chapters for drowning prevention.
Dr Butterly said upon his induction: “I am pleased to accept this honor not for my personal satisfaction but as a testament that my work in supervising academically Stathis and Eleftheria have been fruitful. They came to Leeds with poor resources in money and language and converted themselves into strong, dedicated, and accomplished professionals. It is a joy to think that I have played a little role in their professional and academic growth. As I get older, I realize that we need to find imitators of goodness, and those that have the privilege to come across both of them, without a doubt know that they do it.”
The GLSA President, Dr Avramidis, added: “Ron has been a humble academic who enjoyed to be useful without claiming fame or credit. He has helped thousands of students in his career, some of whom were Greeks. People in the field of sport science and lifesaving have benefited by him. He is a Philhellene and we felt obliged to recognize his contributions.” Photo: GLSA.
