GLSA Awards

The GLSA presents various prestigious awards to honor outstanding achievements in all areas of applied lifeguarding, lifesaving sport and aquatics.


The GLSA Lifetime Achievements Award is the highest individual honor of the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association. It is presented annually to an individual with outstanding contributions to lifesaving sport, applied lifeguarding, aquatics and water safety.


The GLSA Organisation of the Year Award is the highest team honor of the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association. It is presented annually to an organization that has demonstrated outstanding contributions to lifesaving sport, applied lifeguarding, aquatics and water safety.


The GLSA Citation of Honor is presented to individuals or organizations that have made important contributions to advance the activities of the Greek Lifesaving Sports Assocation in terms of water safety or lifesaving sport. It was first known as  "Medal of Honor" or "Certificate of Merit".


The GLSA Rescue Award is presented to an individual for having performed a water rescue.


The GLSA Fair Play Award is presented to an individual or team that has demonstrated the golden rules of fair play prior, during or after a competition.


The GLSA Coach of the Year Award is presented annually to an individual with the highest contributions to lifesaving sport as a coach.


It is presented to the Largest Youth Lifesaving Team of the Greek Lifesaving Cup.


It is presented to the Largest Adult Lifesaving Team of the Greek Lifesaving Cup.


The GLSA Male Athlete of the Year Memorial Award is presented to the male adult sport lifesaver that has excelled in the below categories: (1) Won the most medals in international, overseas and national competitions within a year. The award is presented annually at the end of the calendar year. The award is named after the legendary American Bob Burnside, founder of the United States Lifesaving Association and creator of the iconic "Burnside rescue can" that was used on the TV series "Baywatch". Burnside was honored by the International Swimming Hall of Fame and became a GLSA Honorary Member a few days before he passed away (more).


The GLSA Female Athlete of the Year Memorial Award is presented to the male adult sport lifesaver that has excelled in the below categories: (1) Won the most medals in international,overseas and national competitions within a year. The award is presented annually at the end of the calendar year. The award is named after the pioneer Greek Panagiotis Nastos, who established the Piraeus Swimming School around 1900 A.D., teaching swimming, rowing to students of all age groups and genders, including women, in an era in which this was prohibited. Nastos is a modest precursor of Greek lifesaving sport.
The GLSA Young Male Athlete of the Year Memorial Award is presented to the male up to 17 years old sport lifesaver that has excelled in the below categories: (1) Won the most medals in international,overseas and national competitions within a year. The award is presented annually at the end of the calendar year.


The GLSA Male Athlete of the Year Memorial Award is presented to the female up to 17 years old adult sport lifesaver that has excelled in the below categories: (1) Won the most medals in international,overseas and national competitions within a year. The award is presented annually at the end of the calendar year.


The GLSA Volunteer Awards are presented to our volunteers that contribute with their sweat, time, energy and enthusiasm to our activities. They are the backbone of our association and the unsung heroes. There are various categories based on the number of hours of voluntary service.


These awards have been presented previously by other organizations.
