Happy Birthday Dr Steve Beerman - 15/8
The global lifesaving family joyfully celebrates the
birthday of Dr. Steve Beerman, an extraordinary leader whose vision and
dedication have transformed water safety worldwide. From his early days as a
young Canadian lifeguard to his presidency of the International Life Saving
Federation (ILS), Dr. Beerman’s journey has been marked by service, humility,
and innovation.
As ILS President (2008–2011), he worked tirelessly to
elevate drowning prevention as a humanitarian priority, securing official

Committee. His leadership helped shine a global spotlight on drowning as a
major but preventable cause of death, particularly in low- and middle-income
countries.
Beyond his presidency, Dr. Beerman has contributed to
groundbreaking research and community-based interventions, from Canada to
Bangladesh, Uganda, and the Philippines. His work with the Canadian Drowning
Prevention Coalition and as an advisor to the WHO Global Report on Drowning
reflects his lifelong commitment to saving lives through science, education,
and collaboration.
Guided by the philosophy “learn something and help someone every day,” Dr. Beerman remains a role model of wisdom, modesty, and compassion. On this special day, the world lifesaving community salutes him with gratitude and admiration.
