NLC 2025: What an experience!

With our lifesaving club, North Sea Lifeguards, we departed on Friday, December 19, for Athens, where we stayed at the beautiful Novotel. After settling in, I reviewed the Saturday agenda with the athletes.

Early Saturday morning, we set off for the Acropolis. The Acropolis is an ancient fortified hilltop in Athens, literally translated as "highest point of the city." Originally a citadel dedicated to the goddess Athena, it features iconic structures such as the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike, symbolizing the glory of 5th-century Athens.

Later, we visited the Acropolis Museum, opened in 2009, housing archaeological findings with an impressive collection from the 6th century BC to the early Middle Ages. The upper floor showcases the Parthenon sculptures, offering stunning views and a glass floor revealing ongoing excavations.

After a delightful meal, we headed to the Olympic Museum, welcomed by Dr. Stathis Avramidis. This museum in the Golden Hall focuses on the modern games. Following the museum visit, a symposium took place with various speakers, and we also explored the Golden Hall shopping center.

On Sunday morning, we experienced the changing of the guards and enjoyed the local shops. The excitement built up for the competition at the Alimos Municipal Swimming Pool, which featured both men's and women's teams from various countries. The atmosphere was electric as each team showcased their skills and teamwork. It was a beautiful and thrilling competition, demonstrating the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship among the participants. As the day came to a close, the athletes fell asleep, tired but satisfied after a rewarding experience.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the organizing committee, and in particular to Dr. Stathis Avramidis, for making this event possible. Thank you for this wonderful experience! Photos: GLSA.
