LIFE-GUARDIANS’ ENCYCLOPEDIA:
A Landmark Publication Chronicles 45 Centuries of Lifesaving History

Athens, Greece 12.04.2026. The Greek Lifesaving Sports Association (GLSA) proudly announces the publication of “Life-guardians’ Encyclopedia: 45 Centuries of Drowning Prevention, Rescue, Treatment”, a groundbreaking work by Dr. Stathis Avramidis that documents humanity’s long and global struggle to protect life in water.

Spanning 45 centuries of history, this unique encyclopedia presents the evolution of drowning prevention, rescue, and treatment through the lives and contributions of extraordinary individuals from across civilizations. From ancient Egyptian river rescuers and Greek harbor swimmers to modern pioneers of resuscitation, lifesaving, and water safety education, the book brings together a diverse and interdisciplinary narrative of human effort, innovation, and courage.

Unlike traditional encyclopedias, “Life-guardians’ Encyclopedia” goes beyond historical facts. It offers a structured exploration of lifesaving across seven historical periods—from antiquity to the modern global era of drowning prevention. Readers will discover not only technological and medical advancements, but also the human stories behind them: physicians, lifeguards, educators, athletes, academics, innovators, media professionals, leaders, administrators, royals, celebrities, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and even animals whose actions saved lives.

Dr. Avramidis said: “This book is a tribute to humanity’s timeless commitment to protect life in water. It reflects the wisdom, sacrifices, and achievements of individuals who shaped the field of lifesaving across centuries. By learning from them, we can build a safer future.

The encyclopedia is designed as both a scholarly reference and an inspirational resource. It includes thematic chapters, biographical profiles, historical timelines, and global perspectives, making it valuable for researchers, educators, lifeguards, policymakers, and anyone interested in water safety. With drowning remaining a major global public health issue and lifesaving sport aims to enter the Olympic Games, this publication is timely and essential. It highlights the importance of education, media, and collaboration in reducing drowning.

The encyclopedia is published by the GLSA. It is endorsed by the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF), the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee (IPCC), the International (ILS), the European (ILSE) and the Mediterranean (MLC) Lifesaving Federations. Dr. Avramidis is an internationally recognized expert who acts as a connector of history, science, education, and media to promote water safety. He dedicated the book to his heroes, whose work revolutionized safety; the “father” of world lifesaving, Dr Harald Vervaecke PhD, and the “father” of Baywatch, Gregory J. Bonann.

The ISHOF Chairman, Dr Bill Kent, said: “Stathis' outstanding and pioneering encyclopedia justifies his reputation as an author. This tremendous resource connects harmonically the past, the present and the future. Congratulations!

The IPCC President, Prof. Stephan Wassong, added: “This landmark publication offers an unprecedented historical and scientific overview of lifesaving practices, spanning 45 centuries of knowledge, innovation, and humanitarian effort. We commend its value as a vital reference for professionals, researchers, and institutions worldwide.”
