Reverse the Odds: New European Guide Gives Youth Workers
the Tools to Prevent Gambling Harm Before It Starts

The publication of Reverse the Odds: Guide for Youth Workers marks an important milestone in European efforts to address the growing challenge of youth gambling and gambling-related harms. Developed through international cooperation and funded by the European Union, this practical guide provides youth workers, educators, facilitators, teachers, and other non-clinical professionals with evidence-based knowledge and tools to recognize, prevent, and respond to gambling risks among young people.

As gambling increasingly intersects with digital environments, social media, gaming platforms, and sports culture, the guide helps practitioners understand youth gambling behaviours, identify early warning signs, implement effective prevention strategies, utilise digital youth work approaches, promote sport-based prevention, create positive alternatives to gambling, and strengthen community engagement. Rather than focusing on treatment, the publication empowers frontline youth professionals to build safer, healthier, and more resilient environments for young people.

The guide was produced through the collaboration of the City of Niš Debate Club (Serbia), Verbund der sozial-kulturellen Migrantenvereine in Dortmund e.V. (Germany), Greek Lifesaving Sport Association (Greece), and Pagėgiai Municipality (Lithuania). Funded by the European Union, the publication reflects a shared commitment to reducing gambling-related harm and promoting informed, positive youth development across Europe.
