Avramidis Honored for Film Linking Saviors to Olympic Vision
Athens, Greece 30.06.2026. The Royal Life Saving Society UK, which enjoys the patronage of His Majesty King Charles III, honored Dr. Stathis Avramidis with the prestigious “William Henry Award” for voluntary work that promoted the work of the society, by directing the film “To the Saviors”, a tribute to some of the world’s most influential water safety personalities and champions the inclusion of lifesaving to the Olympic Games.
Named after William Henry, the founder of the Royal Life Saving Society and one of the most influential pioneers in the history of drowning prevention, the William Henry Award is presented to individuals whose voluntary contributions significantly advance the objectives of the lifesaving movement. The distinction recognizes dedication, service, and initiatives that help promote water safety, rescue education, and the preservation of lifesaving values. Founded in 1891, the RLSS UK is among the oldest and most respected lifesaving organizations in the world.
The award was conferred in recognition of 'To the Saviors', a film directed by Dr. Avramidis that pays tribute to those whose vision, courage, and leadership shaped the history of drowning prevention and rescue. Through powerful imagery, the film honors a remarkable collection of international personalities, including William Henry, founder of the Royal Life Saving Society; Nelson Mandela, global symbol of unity and human dignity; Queen Elizabeth II, lifelong patron of lifesaving; Gregory J. Bonann, creator of Baywatch; Dr. Harald Vervaecke, one of the most influential leaders in modern lifesaving; Dr Bill Kent, Chairman of the International Swimming Hall of Fame; Steven Munatones, Founder of World Open Water Swimming Association and many other distinguished pioneers whose contributions have helped save lives and advance aquatic safety worldwide.
Beyond honoring these remarkable figures, the film also conveys a broader message: that lifesaving sport deserves recognition as an Olympic sport. By presenting the achievements of pioneers, athletes, rescuers, physicians, educators, administrators, and humanitarian leaders from around the world, To the Saviors demonstrates that lifesaving embodies the very ideals celebrated by the Olympic Movement—excellence, service, courage, education, international cooperation, and the protection of human life. The film argues that a sport whose ultimate purpose is saving lives has earned its place among the world's most respected athletic disciplines.
Receiving the award, Dr. Avramidis stated: "I am deeply honored for this recognition. The film was created as an expression of gratitude toward all those who dedicate themselves to protecting human life and as a promotional means to champion the Olympic aspiration of the world’s greatest sport." By honoring the voluntary hours for creating “To the Saviors”, RLSS UK recognizes the important role that art, education, and public awareness plays towards these messages.
