Leucothea Saved Odysseus
and Teaches Us Drowning Prevention!

Christopher Nolan’s cinematic Odyssey has brought the adventures of the ingenious Odysseus back to the big screen. Yet one figure from Homer’s epic, almost 3,000 years later, has acquired an entirely modern mission: Leucothea!

In The Odyssey, the sea goddess saves the shipwrecked Odysseus by giving him her magical veil, which helps him survive at sea. Inspired by this ancient symbolism, internationally renowned “waterman” Dr Stathis Avramidis created the International Swim & Save Program “Leucothea”, a free online educational initiative of the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association and students of Furtwangen University (Antonios Stefanakis, Mohammad Sharif Azimy, Marian Ankoma-Sey, Gayatri Naidu Arnapalli, Basim Siddiqui, and Takal Ebrahimkhel).

The programme is endorsed by leading organisations and has been saluted by their representatives: Dr Harald Vervaecke, Secretary General of the International Lifesaving Federation; Dr Bill Kent, Chairman of the International Swimming Hall of Fame; Dott. Giorgio Quintavalle, President of the Mediterranean Lifesaving Confederation; Dr Dirk Bissinger, President of the International Life Saving Federation; Leslie Donavan, former President of the International Federation of Swimming Teachers Association; Dr Steve Beerman, Deputy Commonwealth President, Royal Life Saving Society Co-Chair, Canadian Drowning Prevention Coalition and Bojan Golubovic, Leader of the Lifesaving Network.

Through 18 educational modules, Leucothea teaches, in a simple and modern way, drowning prevention, water safety, swimming, survival at sea, rescue, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, lifesaving sport, fair play and Olympism.

And this Greek initiative has already set sail across the world. Within its first weeks of operation, it attracted users from 18 countries across 4 continents. The knowledge is offered completely free of charge, through computer or mobile phone, without geographical or financial barriers.

From Homer to Nolan, and from mythology to drowning prevention, the message remains timeless: Once, Leucothea saved Odysseus. Today, she wants to teach all of us how to save ourselves—and others. Learn for free: https://leucothea.vercel.app/
