THANOS SAKKAS, BECOMES A GLSA SUPPORTER
Greece 11.02.2020. The Greek Lifesaving Sports Association proudly announces the inclusion of the World Medalist Thanos Sakkas in the team of the GLSA Supporters.
Thanos Sakkas said about his appointment: "In 1995, Nelson Mandela united South Africa
using as means the World Rugby Cup and the motto "one team, one
nation". I see for decades my native fellow lifeguard professionals
divided in tribes. As member of the Greek team that participated in the World
Lifesaving Championship 2000, I realize the value of the sport as means of
growth. Lifesaving sport can unite everyone who loves, does or needs sports and
provides water safety in Greece. No other existing Greek organization was
proved capable to succeed in this obligation so far. The Greek Lifesaving Sports Association
arose, daring to fill in this gap. It is lead and followed by capable and
visionary people who understand the importance of using lifesaving sport to
save lives. They deserve my admiration. I hope that the International Life
Saving Federation will support them, so we can see competent National Greek
Teams in the international lifesaving championships."
Thanos Sakkas is a Greek windsurfing champion. He was
born in Piraeus and spent his childhood and adolescence in Kastela and
Mikrolimano doing sailing and rowing. He has been involved in the sport since the late 70's. He
has world championships, while he is also a coach as well as in rowing, water
skiing and is a wakeboard judge. Along with his surfing career, he has studied
Management of Human Resources at the University of Greenwich, England. Between 1998-2011 he was the publisher of "3S boards
and skis" magazine and the director of the sports events company. He competed in 5 World Championships, 1 International Championship, 1 Balkan Championship, 1 National Championship in
Great Britain. He holds 5 Pan-Hellenic Olympic class titles and 2 Pan-Hellenic
titles Funboard (course racing & slalom).
GLSA President, Dr. Stathis Avramidis said: "GLSA
was founded on 4-2-2020. Since then it became the home of lifesaving sport in
Greece and a respected organization with national origin and international
impact. We are thrilled to be associated with such a remarkable athlete and
events facilitator as Thanos Sakkas. This man is a genius in almost everything
that involves sailing. Moreover, he has experienced the joy of lifesaving sport
by competing in a World Lifesaving Championship. We are honored to have Thanos
among the team of the GLSA Supporters."
