Emilie Grand’Pierre, OLY becomes a GLSA
Supporter
Haiti 06.10.2021. The Greek Lifesaving Sports Association proudly announces that the Olympian Swimmer Emilie Grand’Piere is accepted as a GLSA Supporter.
Emilie Grand’Piere said: “I would like to warmly thank GLSA. This award is touching because my
mother first put her children in swimming because she lost three cousins to
drowning. The Greek Life Saving Association is doing admirable work; I hope
that my support can advance your mission. I would like to also thank my parents
for recognizing the necessity of water-safety. Lastly, I would like to thank
Dr. Mervilus. Your dedication to all facets of swimming—both competitive and
lifesaving— helps bring the skill of swimming to the people of Haiti, and I am
honored to be an athlete under your leadership.”
Emilie Grand’Pierre is a
Haitian American swimmer and daughter of Reginald and Clio
Grand’Pierre. She is currently completing a bachelor’s degree at
Bowdoin College where she is majoring in Computer Science and Digital and
Computational Studies on the pre-medical track. She has swum competitively
since the age of six, and currently is an All-American member of the Women’s
Swimming and Diving team at Bowdoin College. Emilie began representing Haiti in
international competition in 2018. Over the past four years, she has won two
international medals, held four national records, and most recently competed in
the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo where she bettered her national record in the
100m Breaststroke. She hopes to continue representing Haiti in future
competitions and ultimately to use her platform to better the world in the
realms of both sports and digital education.
The GLSA President, Dr. Stathis
Avramidis, said: “Emilie is one of the
many examples of people who converted a family drowning-related tragedy into
triumph. Her accomplishments both on the academic and the sporting side are the
proof that mankind raises from its ashes and moves forward. Emilie knows that
the show must go on and she can do it like a few people, honoring her homeland
of Haiti. For the GLSA people, it is a privilege to be associated with her,
because we too, have lost in our family 3 people at sea. It is apparent that we
have a lot in common; country and family history. We are proud to enlist her
among our Supporters.”
