Sestriere Sport Awards International Film Festival Honors Eagle's
Rebirth Among
1,435 Submissions
Italy, 25 July 2026. On the
day designated by the World Health Organization as World Drowning Prevention
Day, the Sestriere Sport Awards International Film Festival honored the Greek
filmmaker, author and water safety expert Dr. Stathis Avramidis for his documentary
Eagle's Rebirth. Selected as one of only seven official competition
films from 1,435 submissions representing 37 countries, the documentary is a
cinematic tribute to the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, told
through lifesaving—the world's only humanitarian sport and a candidate for
future inclusion in the Olympic Games.
The distinction carries symbolic
significance. While governments, organisations and communities around the world
marked World Drowning Prevention Day by promoting water safety, the
international film community honoured a documentary dedicated to the very
values of drowning prevention, resilience and lifesaving through the universal
language of cinema.
The festival attracted 1,435 submissions from 37 countries, selecting only seven productions from five nations as its official competition films. Representing Greece, Eagle's Rebirth was selected as one of the festival's official competition films and screened at Cinema Fraiteve before receiving its international distinction. The event was held with the support and patronage of the European Commission, the Piedmont Region, the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Automobile Club of Turin, the Fiamme Gialle Sports Groups, and CSAIn Turin, reflecting the festival's strong institutional backing.
Rather
than presenting a conventional sports documentary, Eagle's
Rebirth tells the extraordinary true story of Pantelis
Avramidis, who overcame cancer and severe physical adversity
before discovering competitive lifesaving in his eighties and ultimately
becoming a European and World Masters Lifesaving Champion. Through painterly
imagery, symbolic storytelling and emotional narration, the film explores
perseverance, renewal and the belief that it is never too late to begin again.
Receiving the award, Dr. Stathis Avramidis commented: "I am deeply honoured that Eagle's Rebirth has been recognised by an international festival devoted to sports. This distinction belongs foremost to my father whose life demonstrates that determination is stronger than despair and that hope can survive even the most difficult circumstances." Reflecting on the deeper meaning of the documentary, he added: "This film is not simply about winning championships. It is about winning battles that cannot be measured by a stopwatch or a medal. Cancer, ageing and physical limitations can challenge the human body, but they do not have to defeat the human spirit. I hope audiences around the world will recognise a part of themselves in Pantelis' journey and understand that every setback can become the beginning of a new ascent."
The
documentary has already attracted international attention. Prior to its success
in Italy, it was selected for the Hollywood International Indie
Film & Screenplay Awards and the Los Angeles Movie &
Music Video Awards and earned three awards at
Australia's Whispers of the Universe International Film Festival
for Best
Inspirational Film, Best Experimental Film,
and Best
Director – Experimental Film and the Bronze Award for Best Animation
Written, directed and produced by Dr. Stathis Avramidis, with narration by the talented Joe Geoffrey, Eagle's Rebirth is endorsed by the International Swimming Hall of Fame, the European, Mediterranean and International Lifesaving Federations. It continues its international festival journey carrying a message that extends far beyond sport. Some films tell stories. Eagle's Rebirth reminds us that the greatest victories are not always won in stadiums, but within the human spirit.
